Great Date Ideas for Teens
For teenagers, going on dates are even more stressful than usual.
On top of social pressures, they must also deal with their parents, who are often either completely against or at least hesitant about their children dating.
On top of that, through the media, their peers and by watching the adults around them, teens have a preconceived notion of what a date should be like.
To help relieve some of the pressure, talk with your teen about what makes a great date and let them know what is and is not appropriate.
Choosing activities together will allow them to feel as though they are in control of their loves lives while you can still make sure they're choosing age-appropriate dates.
Fun date ideas for teens revolve around their interests.
While an adult may prefer a candlelit French dinner, teens enjoy less conservative meals and more adventurous outings.
Try dropping your teen and their date off at an arcade/dining combination.
After enjoying a simple meal of pizza or hamburgers and fries, they can have fun together competing and playing the arcade games they grew up loving.
Many arcades also have laser tag or roller skating rinks, both activities that are a lot of fun for teenagers and allow them to spend time together without being completely alone.
While adults tend to choose more intimate settings for their dates, teens learn more about one another by how they act and can relate better to similar tastes in activities, clothing, music, movies, etc.
Since they're younger, teenagers don't need to discuss serious topics, such as their previous relationships, religious preferences or career goals.
Choosing less intimate teen date ideas, such as riding go-karts or seeing a sporting event, take a lot of the pressure off your teenager and allows him or her to be themselves without feeling forced.
To prevent sexual expectations or awkwardness, teenagers should not be left alone on a private date.
As parents, it's important to not actually accompany your teen on their date, but to drop them off in a public place and base your decision on where and how long the date will last on how trustworthy you feel your teenager is.
It's not smart to allow your teen to invite his or her date to the house to watch a movie alone in their room, but taking them to a movie theater and picking them up when the movie ends is probably a safer bet.
It's important to have boundaries while still respecting your teenager's need for independence and social interactivity.
While group outings as teenagers can be fun, group or double dates should be avoided unless the couples are all familiar with each other.
You don't want your teenager comparing himself or herself to their friends, who may be on more intimate levels with their dates.
The important thing to remember is that you should choose when you feel your teenager is ready to date and are then responsible for regulating his or her outing decisions.
